This coming weekend, the Atlanta rap legend turned flutist will soon receive one of music’s highest academic honors.

On Saturday (May 10), Berklee College of Music announced that he and Sara Bareilles will be presented an honorary Doctor of Music degree at the 2025 commencement ceremony at Boston University’s Agganis Arena. The recognition reflects not only his revolutionary contributions to hip-hop but also his lasting impact on the evolution of music and culture.

The honorary doctorate award comes on the heels of the announcement that the nine-time Grammy winner will be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame alongside Antwan “Big Boi” Patton.

In 2023, he released New Blue Sun, his first solo album in two decades. The experimental, flute-driven project broke new ground, becoming the first instrumental album to chart on the Billboard 200.
