DaBaby honors Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee who was fatally stabbed on a train in the rapper’s hometown of Charlotte

The Charlotte, N.C rapper released a music video titled “Save Me” in tribute to Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee who lost her life on a train in Charlotte.

DaBaby has released a music video showcasing him rescuing Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska from a fatal stabbing. (He included her GoFundMe link in his post about the video.).

The rapper, who was raised in Charlotte, NC, where the stabbing happened, dropped the visual for the song “Save Me” that opens with news footage about the deadly incident that happened on a light rail.

When the song actually starts, DaBaby takes the perspective of a man sitting nearby who’s rapping introspectively about morals, needing love, and saving people. Once an actor who represents suspect Decarlos Brown Jr. stands up to attack the actor who’s supposed to be Zarutska, DaBaby stands up and stops him in his tracks — thus, keeping the woman alive.

Following the video's release, the Charlotte Area Transit System — where the incident initially took place — issued a statement clarifying that they were not involved in the video's production. "CATS was not involved in this filming, nor did we grant permission,” reads the statement. “This filming was reported last night via the CATS See-Say Application in the CATS-Pass App at which time security responded by escorting them off the vehicle as per the video."

On August 22, Zarutska was stabbed three times by Brown while traveling on the CATS light rail train. She was discovered with a stab wound to her neck. Brown was subsequently found and apprehended at the same station where the incident occurred.

"The brutal attack on Iryna Zarutska on the Charlotte Light Rail was a disgraceful act that should never happen in America," said FBI Director Kash Patel in a statement. "The FBI jumped to assist in this investigation immediately to ensure justice is served and the perpetrator is never released from jail to kill again."

Brown was charged with one count of an act leading to death on a mass transportation system. If found guilty, he could receive a maximum sentence of life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty.

Brown, who had an earlier diagnosis of schizophrenia, had been arrested at least 14 times in the past for various charges, including robbery with a dangerous weapon and felony larceny.
