Dame Dash breaks down The Truth about Aaliyah’s relationship.
Before Jay-Z fell crazy in love and eventually married Beyoncé, the Roc Nation mogul was enamored with the late R&B singer Aaliyah, according to former Roc-A-Fella exec Dame Dash.
On Wednesday (July 19), the Harlem native recently made an appearance on the That’s F***ed Up Podcast. When asked was asked about R. Kelly’s relationship with Aaliyah and whether or not he should be in prison.
Dame Dash said. “I think he’s where he belongs,” He added without hesitation. “I know Aaliyah, so I know what he did.” Dame and Aaliyah dated each other from 2000 until her untimely death in a plane crash on Aug. 25, 2001.
She was only 22. Dame says Hov was just one of many who showed interest in the “Rock the Boat” singer.
Dame also added: “I can’t be objective about that, you know what I’m saying? But he definitely seemed like he needed some help.”
About getting involved in his ex’s ordeal with Kelly, Dame said Aaliyah asked him to “leave it alone.” However, he was deeply upset that JAY-Z — who he founded Roc-A-Fella Records with — released collaborative projects with the disgraced R&B singer, regardless of what he knew.
“I couldn’t believe he did a project with R. Kelly knowing that he had raped my girl,” he said about one of the reasons he had a falling out with Hov.
He continued: “I was like, ‘Just don’t put my name on that, I don’t want no money from that. If it is, put it to Aaliyah foundation’ … like they did this shit twice.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Dame Dash explained how he and Jay-Z actually fought for Aaliyah’s attention at the same time.
“I didn’t look at her like that because she was like a tomboy,” Dame Dash began. “She was little to me. But then one time- I guess we had the same book keeper, and I walked past. Every time I saw her, she looked different. She had different looks every time and I was like, ‘Who the f—k is that?’ I just threw my A-game. And then, you know, I guess Jay was trying to get at her as well, and I didn’t know. It got brought up and I was like ‘F—k both of y’all.’ But it never worked out for them, and we were both trying to get at her. And I kind of eased up, but then we ran into each other. It’s a long story.
“Everybody was getting at Aaliyah, bro,” Dame Dash continued. “She’ll go to dinner with a n—a but she wasn’t gonna just be smashing. So that was the big deal, like, who can get with Aaliyah.” Then, one of the podcast hosts asked whether Hov was bitter about it. “Obviously,” he replied. “Yeah, he felt a way. But everybody knows that sh*t. Well, they be trying to act like he was really f—king with her. Nah, he was sending flowers and doing all that s**t, he was courting her. So we were both going hard and we ended up in the same house for 4th of July. So it was, like, one day it might lean towards him then it’ll lean towards me.
Dame added. “But I was just on fire that week,” he concluded. “Everything I was saying was funny, you know what I’m saying? I remember coming downstairs and he was like… ‘Cause like, you know, his friends were laughing at him and sh*t.
