First Look Trailer for “Space Jam: A New Legacy” starring LeBron James Is Scoring Positive Reactions

The film is set to be released on July 16 in theatres and on HBO Max.

LeBron James recreates iconic Heat dunk with Lola Bunny in 'Space Jam: A New Legacy' trailer

Released on Saturday, the trailer picks up with James as he’s encouraging his son, Dom (newcomer Cedric Joe), to follow in his footsteps in basketball. Unfortunately, his son wants to pursue his own path, and subsequently, James is thrust into “The Serverse,” a bizarre digital space unlike any he’s experienced before.

“What in The Matrix hell?” he says, as he’s introduced to Al-G Rhythm, the evil computer algorithm played by Oscar nominee Don Cheadle, who takes his son away.

While the stakes for the sequel are understandably high, Lee recently offered fans his assessment of the film as being “a better movie” than the Jordan-starring 1996 original.

Naturally, James must then assemble “an elite team” to ensure the safe return of his son, finding it in Bugs Bunny and his Looney Tunes pals.

In the the live-action/animated sports comedy, James must then defeat Al-G-Rhythm’s digitized Goon Squad. The film will reveal just how far some parents will go to connect with their kids.

The Warner Bros. film, directed by Malcolm D. Lee, is making it clear this is a new take on the franchise—which originally starred Michael Jordan—even if it is based on the same concept of mixing a real, live-action sports star with the studio’s famous Looney Tunes characters. James stars as himself and gets stuck inside a villainous A.I. (played by Marvel’s Don Cheadle). He, of course, then must team up with the animated favorites (minus one) for an epic basketball game to escape. There’s way more to it too, some of which you see in the first trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Zendaya is voicing the character of Lola Bunny in the upcoming film “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”

The news was confirmed via the film’s official Twitter account on Saturday. “Welcome to the Jam, @Zendaya,” the tweet reads, alongside a basketball emoji and a gif of Lola Bunny. Entertainment Weekly was the first to report the casting news.
