Hip hop celebrates Nipsey Hussle’s 37th Birthday
The two times Grammy Award-winning rapper was just 33.
It's been three years that the world tragically lost Nipsey Hussle. Born Ermias Joseph Asghedom on this day, (August 15), the hip hop community is taking the time to wish the Grammy Award-winning rapper a happy birthday. He would have turned 37.
Nip had an undeniable impact within the music industry as an independent artist and an even greater impact within his hometown of Los Angeles.
In 2017, he opened the Marathon Clothing store as a way to inspire the youth and give back to the place where he grew up. Additionally, as a staunch advocate for diversity in the technology space Nip opened up Vector 90, a co-working office STEM education center in his neighborhood, right before the release of his platinum-selling debut album Victory Lap.
Nipsey Hussle was killed in his own “Marathon” clothing store by local rapper Eric Holder on (March 31, 2019) while making an impromptu visit as he would a few times a week.
His death dealt a big blow to Hip Hop as a genre. He had finally just released his debut and only studio album Victory Lap in 2018 after more than a decade of releasing critically acclaimed mixtapes.

On Wednesday July 6, a jury delivered its guilty verdict in the trial of Eric R. Holder Jr., who fatally shot the late rapper outside the rapper’s clothing store in Los Angeles on March 31, 2019.
The jury found Holder guilty of first-degree murder, and he’s now facing life in prison. A sentencing date has not been set.
Eric R. Holder was first indicted on one count of murder, two counts each of attempted murder, assault with a firearm, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon in May, 2019. He has been accused of carrying out the murder over allegations that he was labeled a “snitch,” which prompted him to confront the rapper and open fire. Holder’s legal team has denied that the murder was premeditated, and said it happened in the “heat of passion” less than 10 minutes after he confronted Nip on the snitching allegations.
The woman who drove Holder to Marathon recently said in court that she was unaware that he was planning to shoot the rapper and unknowingly became a getaway driver in the process.
