Despite Smith's resign statement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences following his Oscars incident─the King Richard star blocked from attending Academy events for 10 years.
The 94th Academy Awards on March 27. “The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” said AMPAS president David Rubin in a letter to the full membership after a contentious 9 AM PT starting virtual meeting today concluded. Less than two weeks, In a statement from the Academy to Variety:
“The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage.
During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented.
Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation. The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.
As previously reported, Will Smith walked on stage and slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars before returning to his seat and telling the comedian to keep his “wife’s name out” his “fucking mouth.”
“Wow, Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me,” Rock said, to which Smith responded, “Keep my wife’s name out your fucking mouth.” After taking a moment to collect himself in wake of this unprecedented moment, the comedian quipped, “That was the greatest night in the history of television.”
It all happened after Rock joked about Jada’s hair and said she was set to star in a sequel to G.I. Jane.
