Michael Jackson biopic, titled “Michael,” is expected to earn over $70 million during its opening weekend

Jaafar Jackson is set to make his acting debut by portraying his uncle, Michael Jackson, in the biopic titled “Michael.” He expressed his enthusiasm, stating he "can’t wait" to present the music legend's life story on the big screen.

Jaafar Jackson: Bringing my uncle’s story to the big screen has been greatest honor of my life

The Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” is projected to debut with over $70 million (potentially up to $80 million) in its North American opening weekend, aiming to break the record for the biggest music biopic opening, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody ($51M). Globally, the film is expected to earn between $140 million and $150 million.

The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and co-produced by Michael Jackson’s estate, explores the life of the King of Pop starting from his time as a 10-year-old member of the Jackson 5 up to the peak of his fame around 1988, when he was 30 years old and promoting the groundbreaking album Bad.

Originally, the film ventured further into the future, covering the startling 1993 child molestation allegations against Michael Jackson and the ensuing investigation. However, attorneys representing the Jackson Estate discovered that a settlement with one of the accusers prohibited any portrayal or mention of them in the film. This revelation necessitated the creation of a new third act, leading to 22 days of reshoots, costing between $15-20 million.

Earlier reporting from Variety shows predictions of a $65-70 million domestic opening for Michael with hopes for a $700 million overall, worldwide. The film currently sits at 37% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from an aggregation of critics’ reviews.

“Can’t wait ‘till some critics have to eat crow,” Taj Jackson continued, adding, “And yes I will be that petty.”

Jaafar shared a still of himself portraying Michael Jackson in the self-titled film, scheduled for release on April 24.

Ahead of the film comes out this weekend, Jaafar Jackson wrote, "Bringing my uncles story to the big screen has been one of the greatest honors of my life. From day one it’s been an experience I’ll carry with me forever. Every single person involved poured their heart into honoring his truth with care and authenticity. I can’t wait for the WORLD to finally see it IN THEATERS THIS FRIDAY!! APRIL 24TH!"
