Denzel unfazed by cancel culture: ‘Who Cares?’
Denzel Washington doesn't fear cancel culture.
During a recent interview with Complex News, Denzel Washington was questioned about his thoughts on "being canceled." The iconic actor responded, "Who cares?" and further asked, "What made public support so important to begin with?"
Denzel was questioned about whether he considers himself "canceled." Washington responded by asking, "What does that mean — to be canceled?"
When interviewer Jillian Hardeman-Webb mentioned, "It means you lose public support," Washington responded, "Who cares?"
"Why was public support so crucial from the start?" he remarked while promoting his latest film, Highest 2 Lowest, together with frequent collaborator and director Spike Lee.
Hardeman-Webb responded by stating that "followers now are currency," but Washington remained unconvinced.
"I don't care who's following who," he said. "You can’t lead and follow at the same time, and you can’t follow and lead at the same time. I don't follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I don't follow man. I have faith in God. I have hope in man, but look around, it ain't working out so well."
Washington emphasized that he is indifferent to being "followed," and added, "You can't be canceled if you haven't signed up. Don't sign up."
The Oscar winner started laughing and extending his arms while speaking to Lee, "Don't get me started. You know, chest is getting tight talking about it."
Spike Lee expressed a similar feeling and mentioned, "I could care less."
