Mariah remembered feeling “more than butterflies” after an unexpected encounter with the late 2Pac.

Mariah Carey shared a heartwarming encounter with the late Tupac. Discover how he made her feel butterflies.
Mariah Carey, who remarkably ignores the notion of time, delivered a delightful “I wish” when asked in a recent interview about the missed opportunity of being a power couple with the late 2Pac.
In a Brown Bag Mornings discussion on Power 106, shown below, the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards Video Vanguard recipient was questioned about an encounter with 2Pac that she describes as giving her “more than butterflies.” Briefly, she encountered 2Pac at an awards event, which left her feeling somewhat flustered for the remainder of the night.
“Well, he said it like ‘Hi, Mariah’ and I was like [screams].” Carey, who previously described witnessing 2Pac arrive in a Rolls Royce in her 2020 memoir. “I was hosting the AMAs that year so I had to keep going back and forth but I wanted to keep going back and forth because that happened.”
In her interview with Power 106, Carey mentioned that she would have collaborated on a song with Pac, who was tragically shot in Vegas in 1996. She also expressed her "love" for hip-hop in general.
“It was definitely in spite of anyone telling me not to,” she said. “I just, I love hip-hop and I love the moments that we’re talking about, especially ‘Hi, Mariah.’ So yeah, it was a pretty major moment for me to say the least.”
When it was mentioned that she and 2Pac could have been an unparalleled power couple at the time, Carey, whose 1999 song “How Much” incorporates 2Pac’s “Me and My Girlfriend,” appeared to agree with enthusiasm.
“I wish,” she said.
Here for It All, the latest album by Mariah Carey, will be released on September 26. Watch the lyric video for the album’s second single, “Sugar Sweet,” which features Shenseea and Kehlani, below.

That's an interesting bit of history. It’s wild to think about what could have been with those two. Mariah Carey reflecting on the missed connection with 2Pac really shows the kind of impact he had. It’s like a "what if" moment in music history. I heard this story on the Mi Auto Auctions App podcast, and it made me think about other famous duos that never happened.
