Missy Elliott becomes “first female rapper” nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame


The Iconic female rapper has been nominated to the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Missy Elliott makes History as First Female Hip Hop Artist to Be Nominated to ‘Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’

Missy Elliott are in this year's class of nominees up for induction into the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class’ along with A Tribe Called Quest.


On Wednesday (Feb. 1), the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame revealed their list of nominees for the coveted honor. The 51-year-old emcee has been nominated alongside the likes of Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Cyndi Lauper, and George Michael. Throughout her extensive career, Missy Elliott has won five Grammys, and just last year she was honored with a street in her Virginia hometown named after her. The 2023 induction ceremony for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is set to take place later this year, with a time and venue yet to be announced.

“This is an incredible honor. I’m so humbled and grateful to be counted amongst all the incredible honorees," said Missy Elliott. "I’ve spent my career making the kind of music I love and it means so much to know that I have touched others as well. But to hear that I am the first female hip hop artist to EVER be nominated into the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame?!? Wow!! This one hits extra different as I hope it opens doors for other female emcees to be recognized!”


Mona Scott-Young, CEO of Monami Entertainment and best known as the creator of long-running reality franchise Love & Hip Hop, added, “Throughout her career, Missy has broken barriers and blazed a trail for women in music. This nomination is the latest in a long list of ‘firsts’ that solidify her place as one of the most significant artists in music history and a pioneer of female hip hop. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip hop than voting Missy Elliott into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!”


In addition to Missy's inducted, this is her first time on the ballot and her first year of eligibility. This is A Tribe Called Quest's second time making the ballot after first making the list in 2022 but failing to get voted in.


Missy, a four-time Grammy-award winner, has enjoyed an illustrious career that has seen her break the mold for female rappers while excelling in rapping, songwriting, producing and singing. A Tribe Called Quest are cited at one of the best hip-hop groups of all time, with multiple critically acclaimed albums and undeniable influence.

Fans can now cast their vote online daily at vote.rockhall.com or at the Rock Hall in Cleveland.
