‘Michael’ Biopic: Michael Jackson nephew Jaafar debuts his King of Pop in first footage
Lionsgate has unveiled the initial trailer for “Michael,” the forthcoming biopic that explores the life of The King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Jackson is portrayed by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson, under the direction of Antoine Fuqua. The trailer showcases the legendary singer in the studio alongside Quincy Jones, depicted by Kendrick Sampson. The featured songs include “Thriller” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.”
In addition to Jaafar Jackson, “Michael” features Miles Teller portraying Jackson's lawyer and advisor John Branca, Colman Domingo as his father Joe Jackson, Nia Long as his mother Katherine Jackson, Jessica Sula as his sister LaToya Jackson, Larenz Tate as Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records, Laura Harrier as trailblazing music executive Suzanne de Passe, and Kat Graham as Diana Ross.
The biopic, originally scheduled for release on October 3, 2025, is now set to hit theaters on April 24, 2026. Despite finishing production in May 2024, the film underwent reshoots, and there were rumors about it being divided into two parts. However, the trailer suggests it remains a single film.
“‘Michael’ explores the global superstar’s journey to become known to the world as the King of Pop, presenting an intimate look at the life and enduring legacy of one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known,” the synopsis reads.

Michael Jackson recounted that his years with the Jackson 5 were marked by physical abuse from his father, which deprived him of his childhood. However, in the first trailer for "Michael," which maintains a consistently positive tone, we only see brief moments of family enjoyment from that era. The teaser paints a wholly victorious picture of a life that, according to Jackson himself, included significant struggles and unhappiness, despite his creation of some of the most remarkable and influential pop and R&B music of the 20th century.
